Upgrading Of Salam Street And Eastern Corniche Road To An Expressway
Municipality of Abu Dhabi has undertaken major road development schemes on the existing Salam Street in Abu Dhabi City in three sections and the most intricate section was awarded to the Joint-Venture, Samsung-Saif Bin Darwish in 2008 to be completed at the end of 2011. The Project consists of a closed box tunnel along with open sections and access ramps at ends. The scheme extends to Corniche Road and to the Mina Road.
The Project consists of a closed box tunnel along with open sections and access ramps at ends. The scheme extends to Corniche Road and to the Mina Road. The box tunnel to be built intact with the ground adjoining multistoried buildings posed different challenges unforeseen at Tender stage but resolved to go ahead with the construction about 2400m long with covered section and about 1000m of uncovered design. Underground works beyond 10m deep excavations and cavities underground were challenges already surmounted by the Contractor.
The open sections and access ramps at ends are of cast-in-place concrete box slab and wall. The volume of the concrete works approximately is 550,000 m3. It consists of relocation of the massive utility lines of sewers, storm drainage network, potable water lines, Electrical and Telephone lines and plants, fiber optic cables, gas pipe lines, etc. The utility lines found in clusters are to be relocated to the new service corridor without damage and disruption to services.
In many cases the existing services are to be given up and fresh cables and service lines are to be installed to the new requirements. Traffic signals and street lighting are also part of the Contract to be accomplished. Major diversion schemes are planned and implemented on the site to keep the dense town traffic flow safe and easy. Special arrangements were made to keep the heavy traffic flow of heavy duty and light vehicles without closing the main crossing busy roads of Zayed I Street and II Street.
